Your Sin Will Find You Out

“Be sure your sin will find you out.” — Numbers 32:23

Sometimes, children act on their best behavior when their parents are watching, but misbehave the moment they leave. Similarly, some students only follow the rules when the teacher is in the classroom.

Even if a parent or teacher does not witness your wrongdoing, God always sees and knows who is obeying Him.

Furthermore, we rarely fool the people we try to deceive. Secrets have a way of getting out. A classmate might report a student’s misbehavior to the teacher, or the person might accidentally give themselves away. If you think you can do wrong without anyone ever finding out, you are mistaken.

You Cannot Hide from Your Actions

The Bible warns us that our sins will eventually catch up with us. We cannot run away or hide from our bad choices.

Rather than being stubborn and trying to cover up our mistakes, we need to confess our sins to God and ask for His forgiveness. Confession (admitting to God that we did wrong and agreeing with His standard of right and wrong) is the first step toward healing.

Forgiveness vs. Consequences

It is important to remember that receiving forgiveness does not always remove the physical consequences of our actions.

• Stealing: A person who steals may feel genuinely sorry and return the stolen item, but they might still face legal punishment.
• Violence: A person who hits someone and apologizes may still face discipline for their actions.

While God is always ready to forgive us, we must still take responsibility for the results of our choices. We will not always do the right thing, but when we fall short, we must immediately seek God’s forgiveness and work to make things right.
