Why Is School Boring?

The whine drifts from bedrooms of kids around the globe: “Why is school so boring?”

You have to spend the day listening to teachers present the exact same material they teach year after year. While some subjects are fine, others leave you asking yourself, “When will I ever need to know this?”

Some material is too hard to understand, while other subjects are so easy they don’t challenge you at all. To make matters worse, teachers pile on homework so you can’t even escape when the school day ends!

If you cannot see the value in what you are learning, school will always feel like a chore.

The Power of Your Attitude

However, the biggest reason school is boring is your attitude!

Almost anything in life will be boring if you decide beforehand that it will be. One of the most important lessons I learned early in life is this:

You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control how you react to it.

For example, you cannot control having to sit in a waiting room for a doctor’s appointment. However, you can control how you use that time. You can bring a good book to read, or start an engaging conversation with someone nearby.

If you approach every situation with an attitude of making the best of it, you can find interest—and even excitement—almost anywhere.

Finding Value in the Classroom

Since you have to attend school anyway, try approaching it with curiosity and an interest in the world around you. Every subject has practical value:

• History shows you real-life examples of behavior to repeat or avoid, offering inspiration to do great things.
• English helps you develop communication skills that are critical for successful relationships and business.
• Math teaches logical thinking and practical skills you will use in your personal and professional life daily.
• Science and Health provide valuable knowledge to keep you healthy, fit, and aware of how the world works.

Looking back, there are many things I wish I had learned more effectively in school. In fact, I have had to go back as an adult and teach myself skills that I ignored when I was younger. Learning is always easier when you are young.

Try approaching school with a sense of curiosity and adventure. You will be amazed at how quickly the boredom fades. If you bring that same attitude to other areas of your life, you will notice how exciting your world can truly be.
