We Will Reap What We Sow
In Galatians 6:7, the apostle Paul writes:
“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”
What does this powerful verse mean? Paul is comparing our daily choices to a farmer planting seeds.
If a farmer plants green bean seeds, green beans will grow. If he plants corn, corn will grow. He gets exactly what he plants.
In the same way, we are “sowing” our actions and choices every single day. The way we live our lives determines the harvest we will receive.
If we choose to sow bad things (sin and selfishness), we will face eternal separation from God. But if we choose to sow good things (faithfulness and obedience), we will receive eternal life with God.
You Cannot Trick God
Paul reminds us that we cannot mock or trick God. He sees everything we do, and He knows the thoughts and motivations of our hearts.
When we stand before Him on judgment day, He will evaluate the life we have lived. As Romans 2:1-11 explains, God will reward those who seek after good and punish those who follow evil. Let us strive to live in a way that pleases Him.
Do Not Grow Weary
In the verses that follow, Paul encourages us not to grow tired or weary (exhausted and discouraged) of doing good. Doing the right thing is not always easy.
Sometimes, we are tempted to put our own desires ahead of what God commands. For example, if friends invite us to go to a movie during church services, we might want to go. However, we must prioritize God’s things first.
The Consequences of Sowing
Some people think they can live a life of sin and somehow escape the consequences.
If a person repents (sincerely turns away from sin and turns to God), God will graciously forgive them. However, forgiveness does not always erase the physical consequences of our choices. A person who sows bad decisions may still face difficult trials and pain as a result.
Be extremely careful with what you say and do, because we will always reap what we sow!
