Think on THESE Things

Faith & DiscipleshipFriends & RelationshipsPurity & Holiness

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” — Philippians 4:8 (ESV)

When I was growing up, my mother used to quote this verse to me whenever I watched a questionable music video or movie. It was her gentle way of reminding me that I was poisoning, not nourishing, my mind.

We must not let our minds wallow in filth. Instead, we should let our thoughts soar above to heavenly things.

The Mind Filter: Defining the Terms

To help us filter our thoughts, let’s look at what each of these words means, along with their opposites:

  • True: That which conforms to reality and facts. (Opposite: False)
  • Noble (Honorable): Worthy of respect, serious, and decent. (Opposite: Foolish or vulgar)
  • Just: Right conduct judged by God’s divine standard. (Opposite: Unjust)
  • Pure: Clean and free from moral impurities. (Opposite: Polluted or filthy)
  • Lovely: Pleasing, beautiful, and agreeable. (Opposite: Unpleasant or hateful)
  • Good Report (Commendable): Well spoken of and reputable. (Opposite: Worthless or scandalous)

Take the Test

Think about the entertainment you consume. Do the songs you listen to, the books you read, or the shows you watch pass this filter?

Protect your mind, and choose to think on these things!
