It is always encouraging to see young people actively listening during a sermon. While some biblical concepts can be challenging to grasp at first, making an effort to listen is a wonderful step in growing your faith.

One of the best ways to stay focused and remember what you hear is by taking notes. We quickly forget what we hear if we do not write it down. Here are four practical ways you can start taking effective sermon notes today.

Copy Words from the Screen

Preachers often display key points on a screen to help you follow along. Copying these points into a notebook is an easy way to capture the main ideas of the lesson.

If the slides change quickly, do not worry or get frustrated. Simply move on to the next screen and write down what you can. Even capturing a few words from each slide will give you a helpful summary of the lesson to look back on later.

Write Down Bible Verses

Whenever the preacher mentions a scripture, make a note of the reference and turn to it in your Bible.

If the sermon moves fast and includes many verses, just write down as many references as you can. You do not have to write out the full text of the verses during the sermon. Simply listing the book, chapter, and verse allows you to look them up and study them in more depth once you get home.

Write Down Your Own Thoughts

Listening to a sermon often sparks personal insights about your walk with God. Do not hesitate to write down these personal applications.

For example, if the preacher is speaking about the importance of Christian love, you might write:

“I need to show more patience and kindness to my siblings this week.”
