Sometimes I Don't Understand

As a young person, you probably have a lot of questions. Sometimes, adults or parents might roll their eyes when you ask them. But asking questions is a good thing. It is how you learn about your world, and more importantly, about God and His Word.

When Adults Don’t Make Sense

Sometimes, adults do things that make no sense to you. When you ask why, they might just say:

When you are older, you will understand.

While that answer can be frustrating, there is some truth to it. There are many things you won’t fully grasp until you have more life experience. As you grow, you will learn more about God’s Word, understand human nature better, and learn to see things from other perspectives.

Be patient with yourself, and be patient with the adults in your life. Sometimes adults make mistakes, but most of the time, they are making decisions based on lessons they have already learned.

Dealing with Loss and Sadness

Life can bring painful events that are hard to wrap our minds around. When a loved one passes away, we naturally ask, “Why did they have to die?” Death is a difficult mystery. While we may not understand why a loved one died, we can trust that God is loving and is taking care of them.

I understand this pain firsthand. My dad died when I was only five years old. For a long time, I wondered why he had to leave when I was so young. I constantly wondered why he couldn’t be there with me every day.

As I grew, I realized that sin and death entered the world because of the Devil, not because God is cruel. God did not take my father away out of anger; death is simply a part of our broken world that everyone will face eventually.

I also found comfort in knowing that in heaven, there is no death, suffering, or sadness. Even knowing these truths, I still felt sad when I missed him. But I am grateful for the memories and pictures I have, and he stays with me in my heart.

Trusting God with Your Future

It is also normal to feel uncertain about the future. When I was in school, I constantly wondered what I would do when I grew up, and what would happen to my friends and family. The truth is, none of us can predict the future. However, we can trust that God is in control.

Even when we don’t understand what is happening around us, God sees the bigger picture. If we trust and obey Him, He promises to work all things together for our ultimate good.
