Saved or Safe?

Faith & Discipleship

Many young people wonder if and when they should become Christians.

Because this is a serious and personal decision, you should approach it with prayer, Bible study, and honest conversations. You can also talk to older, trusted Christians—like elders (church leaders), preachers, or Bible class teachers—for guidance.

Are We Born in Sin?

Some religious groups teach that babies are born lost in sin. However, the Bible teaches otherwise. When Jesus was on the earth, He said:

“Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven” Matthew 19:14.

Jesus showed that God’s kingdom is made of people who are pure like children. Children are pure in God’s sight and do not need baptism because they have not committed sins.

Another passage that teaches we are born without sin is Ezekiel 18:20. The prophet Ezekiel explained that children are not responsible for their parents’ sins, and parents are not responsible for their children’s sins.

Ultimately, we will each stand before God to answer for our own choices.

The “Safe” Condition

As a child, you are in a “safe” condition before God. This means you are not held guilty for sin.

This safety lasts until you grow enough to understand what sin is, realize that you have sinned, and understand that you need Christ to be saved.

What is the Right Age to Be Baptized?

There is no set age to become a Christian because everyone matures at a different pace. Some people are ready at age 10 or 12, while others might not be ready until they are 15 or older.

Your timeline is unique to you. It may be different from your parents, siblings, or friends.

Becoming a Christian is the most important decision you will ever make.

  • Do not rush: Do not seek baptism just because your friends are doing it.
  • Wait for readiness: Wait until you personally understand the choice and feel ready.
  • Talk to your parents: If you are unsure, ask your parents. They can ask helpful questions to guide your thinking.

How to Please God Right Now

While you are in this safe stage, you can still build a solid relationship with God. Here are a few ways to prepare yourself:

  • Learn His Word: Read the Bible daily and listen closely during Bible classes and sermons.
  • Practice obedience: Obey your parents and show respect to others.
  • Participate in worship: Sing during church services and pray to God often.

God is highly pleased when young people choose to obey and seek Him.
