Have you ever said, or heard someone say:
“I don’t understand the Bible.” “I read the Bible, but I don’t come away with anything.”
Why Bible Study Matters
Bible study is essential for every Christian. The Scriptures reveal the very mind of God (1 Corinthians 2:10-13) and provide everything we need to live a godly life (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Ultimately, these words will judge us in the end (John 12:48-50).
So, how can we get more out of our Bible reading? How can we ensure we walk away with a clear lesson every time?
Six Questions to Ask When Reading
Try answering these six questions whenever you read a passage of Scripture:
- What commands are there to obey?
- What examples are there to follow?
- What sins are there to avoid?
- What promises are there to receive? Are these promises conditional (requiring you to do something first) or unconditional?
- What prayers can I make my own?
- What do I learn about God?
Read with a Purpose
While this method might not give you a complete understanding of every single detail, it ensures you will gain something valuable every time you read.
If you apply what you learn, your faith will grow, and you will please God.
Next time you open the Scriptures, read with a purpose. Read to find out exactly what God is telling you today.
