Rhoda has several good friends at church. She enjoys attending Bible classes with them and spending time together outside of church services.
However, one specific habit has been bothering her. During the worship service, she and her friends usually sit together on their own pew (bench). Often, her friends will point at others in the assembly, whisper jokes, and giggle. They pass these jokes down the row so everyone can join in. Sometimes they laugh at the song leader if a note is too high or low, or make fun of a phrase used in a prayer.
During the sermon (the preacher’s lesson), her friends frequently pass notes, draw pictures, and whisper. Rhoda knows that worship is supposed to be a serious, respectful time focused on God. She does not believe their behavior is appropriate.
Points to Discuss
What do you think Rhoda should do? Talk about this scenario with your parents or a friend, and consider the following:
- Peer pressure: How hard is it to stand out and act differently when your friends are misbehaving?
- Respect for God: What is the main purpose of attending a worship service? How does our behavior reflect our attitude toward God?
- Handling the situation: How can Rhoda talk to her friends about this without sounding self-righteous (acting like she is better than they are)?
- Alternative seating: Should Rhoda consider sitting with her parents instead?
What is the best way for Rhoda to handle this challenge?
