Older people frequently enjoy sharing a lifetime of wisdom with the next generation. Whether you are graduating, heading to college, starting a job, getting married, or raising children, older mentors want to support you.
This desire comes from love. Older people want to save you from unnecessary heartache, suffering, and lifelong regrets. A wise young person will listen to the warnings of those who have already walked down life’s treacherous paths.
Times Change, But Human Nature Doesn’t
You might be tempted to dismiss this advice because “things are different now.” Technology changes rapidly, and our world seems more advanced, but basic human nature remains the same throughout the ages.
The book of Ecclesiastes reminds us that “there is nothing new under the sun.” Your parents may not have had smartphones when they were young, but they still had to make hard choices about entertainment, peer pressure, and choosing the right friends.
For example, read this quote about cultural decline and moral decay:
“All is full of criminality and vice; indeed much more of these is committed than can be remedied by force. A monstrous contest of abandoned wickedness is carried on. The lust of sin increases daily; and shame is daily more and more extinguished. Discarding respect for all that is good and sacred, lust rushes on wherever it will… innocence is no longer seldom, but has wholly ceased to exist.”
You might think this describes modern times, but it was written by Seneca in ancient Rome. Times change, but human struggles do not. That is why we must listen to the godly advice of older generations—their principles are timeless.
The Protection of Timeless Wisdom
Do not forsake the wisdom you have received from godly sources. The book of Proverbs warns us not to ignore the guidance of godly parents (see Proverbs 1:8-9 containing Proverbs 1:8; Proverbs 1:29-33; Proverbs 3:1-4).
Living by this wisdom will direct your steps, decorate your life, and protect you from danger. Proverbs urges us to write these teachings on our hearts:
“…so you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.” (Proverbs 3:4)
Seek Out Wise Mentors
You might not always understand or appreciate the advice you receive from parents, teachers, and preachers. However, their guidance is a treasure if it keeps you from making painful mistakes.
Do not hesitate to reach out to older Christians or grandparents. Ask them for advice on navigating life. Listen carefully to their lessons, spoken in love, to help you live the best life possible.
