Live Like Lamps in the World

Bible Study

Live Like Lamps in the World

Jesus commands His followers to be good examples to the people around them.

Sometimes, people in the world will make fun of us for our faith and Christian values. Because of this peer pressure, some believers become shy about letting others know they are Christians. They might stay quiet when they should stand up for what is right, or they might compromise how they live.

The Purpose of a Lamp

Jesus compared His followers to lamps. Long before the invention of electricity, people used candles or oil lamps to see at night.

To get the most use out of a lamp, a person would place it high up on a lampstand. This allowed the light to spread throughout the entire room.

Hiding a lamp defeats its purpose. If you place a lamp under a basket, the room remains dark and the light is wasted.

How to Let Your Light Shine

As those who love God, we should be proud to let others know that we follow Jesus. We do not do this by acting arrogant (proud or self-important), but by living quietly, consistently, and righteously.

Here are a few practical ways you can let your light shine:

  • Watch Your Speech: Keep your language clean, positive, and encouraging.
  • Always Tell the Truth: Build a reputation for honesty and integrity.
  • Dress Modestly: Show respect for yourself and God in how you present yourself.
  • Share Your Faith: Tell others about Jesus and invite them to study the Bible or attend church services with you.
  • Follow Christ’s Example: Before making decisions, ask yourself what Jesus would want you to do.

Do not hide your faith under a basket. Stand firm, live uprightly, and let your light shine brightly for everyone to see!
