The Dilemma
Fred’s parents were getting ready to go out to dinner. His big sister was staying home to watch him.
Before leaving, Fred’s parents gave him a clear instruction: make your bed and clean your clothes off the floor before bedtime.
Once they left, however, Fred started playing his new video game and completely lost track of time.
The Phone Call
After dinner, Fred’s mother called to say goodnight. She asked him a direct question:
“Did you clean your room?”
Fred realized that if he said yes, he would avoid getting in trouble immediately, but he would be lying. He thought:
“I can just clean it up really quickly before they get home.”
