How The Mighty Have Fallen

When King Saul and his son Jonathan were killed in battle against the Philistines, David sang a song of mourning. In 1 Samuel 1:19, he lamented:

“How the mighty have fallen!”

King Saul, who was once a powerful leader chosen to rule God’s people, now lay dead on the battlefield.

David had many reasons to grieve Saul’s death. When God first chose Saul to be king, Saul was very humble. He obeyed God, and he had the potential to be a great ruler.

However, Saul’s obedience did not last. God commanded him to destroy the Amalekites, a wicked nation that oppressed God’s people. Saul did not follow this instruction completely. He did most of what God asked, but partial obedience is still disobedience. Because of this failure, Samuel told Saul that God would give the kingdom to someone else.

When Saul realized that David would inherit the throne, he became consumed by jealousy. He tried to kill David multiple times, forcing David to flee from his home and live as a fugitive.

Saul eventually stopped serving God altogether. Even so, David was deeply saddened by Saul’s death. He still respected Saul because he was the anointed king of Israel who had once served God faithfully.

Staying Faithful When Others Fall

Sometimes, Christians we look up to stop serving God or make poor choices. It could be a parent, a preacher, a Bible class teacher, or a close friend.

While it is heartbreaking when leaders or mentors fall away, our faith must depend on God, not on other people. We must continue to serve God faithfully, regardless of what others choose to do.

If someone you respect wanders away from God, here is what you can do:

• Pray for them: Ask God to open their eyes and help them change.
• Encourage them: Seek to gently guide them back to what is right.
• Keep serving God: Even if they refuse to change, you must stay strong.

David tried to help Saul, but Saul refused to listen. While some people will reject correction, others will listen and return to the Lord. No matter what, do not give up on your own faith!
