Christians must reject the sinful speech that is so common in the world. One of the clearest ways to identify ourselves as followers of Christ is through pure speech.
In Ephesians 5:4, the Bible condemns three specific types of bad language that are not fitting for saints (believers set apart for God’s purposes):
- Filthiness: Obscene, dirty, or shameful language that is the opposite of purity.
- Foolish talking: Silly, pointless, or stupid talk. This includes behavior like buffoonery (foolish behavior) and speech that makes others look ridiculous.
- Coarse jesting (filthy language): Obscene jokes, dirty humor, and filthy innuendo (indirect, suggestive remarks). This is language twisted to mean inappropriate things.
The Impact of Our Words
Paul made it clear that filthy language has no place in a Christian’s life. When we use bad language, we can make Christ look foolish to those around us.
Imagine someone who uses crude language all week, and then tries to invite a neighbor to church or teach them a Bible verse. Filthy language damages your reputation so deeply that even your good words will be ignored.
A Warning from Peter’s Denial
The apostle Peter provides a clear warning about how worldly speech separates us from Jesus. During Jesus’ trial, Peter stood in a courtyard with a crowd.
When people recognized him and accused him of being a follower of Jesus, Peter denied it vehemently (forcefully and passionately). To prove he didn’t know Jesus, he began to curse and swear. (Matthew 26:73-74)
