Many years ago, I attended a very sad funeral. A young Christian couple had lost their newborn twins at birth.

I was surprised by the poem and message handed out at the service. It described the parents’ joy in knowing that their babies were now guardian angels watching over them. Since then, I have heard other Christians claim that their deceased grandparents are now angels watching over them.

However, a quick study of the Bible reveals a different truth. We do not become angels when we die.

Popular Culture vs. Biblical Truth

It is not surprising that so many people believe our dead loved ones become angels. This idea has been popularized for years in movies, TV shows, songs, and books.

At times, books and studies about angels become highly popular. Yet these ideas are often misguided. Very little is revealed in Scripture about angels, and what is revealed contradicts popular media.

The foundation of a Christian’s belief must be God’s Word, not popular culture.

Humans and Angels Are Different

The Bible teaches that angels are created beings who are entirely different from humans, Psalm 148:2-5.

When describing how Christ is superior to the angels, the writer of Hebrews describes them as serving spirits:

“…ministering spirits (serving spiritual beings) sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14)

Furthermore, Christ’s mission on earth was not to save angels, but to save human beings, Hebrews 2:16. Jesus also promised to confess the names of faithful Christians before the angels, Revelation 3:5.

Angels are unique beings. We do not become angels (or demons) when we die, and angels do not become humans.

No Role in the Physical World

Thinking of our deceased loved ones as angels watching over us has no scriptural authority (backing from the Bible). The Bible is our only reliable source of information about the spiritual realm (the non-physical world of God and spirits).

Our dead loved ones do not watch over us, nor do they act as guardian spirits. The scriptures teach that those who die no longer have any active part in the affairs of this world.

Show Love and Share the Gospel Today

Because you cannot help your loved ones after you die, you must do everything you can for them today. Express your love and share the gospel with those who are lost while you still have the chance.

Once we leave this earth, we might still care about the spiritual state of our friends and family. However, we will be completely powerless to help them, Luke 16:19-31. Make use of the time you have right now.
