Do Barber's Exist

Faith & Discipleship

Author Unknown

A man went to a local barber shop to get his hair and beard trimmed. As the barber worked, the two men struck up an engaging conversation. They discussed many topics, eventually turning to the question of whether God exists.

Barber Shop

The barber shook his head and said:

“Look, man, I don’t believe that God exists.”

“Why do you say that?” the customer asked.

The barber explained:

“Well, it’s simple. You just have to walk out on the street to realize that God does not exist. Tell me, if God exists, why are there so many sick people? Why are there abandoned children? If God exists, there would be no suffering or pain. I cannot believe in a loving God who allows all of these things.”

The customer thought about it for a moment. He chose not to respond immediately because he did not want to start an argument.

Once the barber finished his work, the customer paid and left the shop. Just outside the door, he noticed a man with long, dirty hair and a messy, unkempt beard. It looked like it had been months since his last haircut.

The customer turned around, walked back inside the shop, and said to the barber:

“You know what? Barbers do not exist.”

The barber was shocked:

“How can you say they don’t exist? I am a barber, I am right here, and I just cut your hair!”

“No,” the customer insisted:

“Barbers don’t exist. If they did, there would be no people with long, dirty hair and messy beards like that man outside.”

The barber smiled and said:

“Ah, but barbers do exist! The problem is that people just don’t come to me.”

The customer smiled back and replied:

“Exactly! That is the point. God does exist. The problem is that people do not go to Him or look for Him. That is why there is so much pain and suffering in the world.”
