Bible Reading With Purpose

Bible Study

Have you ever said—or heard someone else say—one of the following statements?

“I just don’t understand the Bible.”

“I read the Bible, but I don’t get anything out of it.”

Bible study is essential for every Christian. The Scriptures (the written word of God) reveal the mind of God to us (1 Corinthians 2:10-13). They also give us everything we need for life (2 Timothy 3:16-17) and will serve as the standard by which we are judged (John 12:48-50).

So, how can we get more value from our Bible study? How can we make sure we walk away with a practical lesson every time we read?

Six Questions for Meaningful Reading

To read with purpose, ask yourself these six questions during your study:

  1. What commands are there to obey? Look for instructions God wants you to follow.
  2. What examples are there to follow? Find positive behaviors in biblical characters that you should copy.
  3. What sins are there to avoid? Identify warnings about bad choices or attitudes.
  4. What promises are there to receive? Look for God’s commitments, and consider if they are conditional (requiring you to do something first) or unconditional.
  5. What prayers can I make my own? Find expressions of worship, thanks, or requests that fit your life.
  6. What do I learn about God? Focus on what the passage reveals about God’s character, love, or power.

While this method may not answer every question you have about a passage, it guarantees that you will gain a practical lesson every time you read.

If you apply these lessons to your life, you will grow in your faith and please God. Next time you open the Scriptures, read with a purpose and listen to what God is telling you.
