Becoming the Right Person

When people think of being a child of God, they often focus on a list of rules—what they can and cannot do. For example, Christians should not tell lies, use bad language, or do other harmful things.

However, God did not give us rules without a reason.

We should not view God as a ruler who simply wants to test our obedience. Instead, we must realize that God’s rules are designed to shape who we are. Every day, the choices we make shape us into a specific kind of person. We are either becoming more like Jesus or more like the devil.

Whose Example Are We Following?

Consider how our daily actions reflect who is influencing us:

• Truthfulness vs. Lying: When we lie, we imitate the devil, whom the Bible calls the father of lies. When we speak the truth, we imitate Jesus, who is the source of all truth.
• Pure Speech vs. Filthy Language: Using bad language or telling inappropriate jokes pulls us closer to the devil’s influence, Colossians 3:8 and Ephesians 5:4. Conversely, speaking pure, clean, and encouraging words reflects Jesus and builds up those around us.

The Goal of Godly Guidance

When your parents, Bible class teachers, or other godly adults guide you, they are not trying to control you or show off their authority. They are trying to help you become the right kind of person. Their ultimate goal is to help you grow to be like Jesus.

How to Grow More Like Jesus

To start shaping your character to look like Christ, commit to these daily habits:

1. Study and Listen: Read your Bible daily and pay attention to parents, teachers, and preachers who explain how God’s children should live.
2. Pray for Strength: Ask God to help you grow more like Jesus and give you the courage to stand firm against peer pressure.
3. Choose Godly Friends: Spend time with others who want to live for Jesus, so you can build each other up.

Decide today who you want to become. Let your daily choices show that you belong to Christ.
